Why are many different websites down at the same time?
When lots of unrelated sites fail together with 500-class errors, a shared infrastructure provider like Cloudflare is the usual suspect. Cloudflare error pages name themselves (error 500/502/521 with a Cloudflare banner), which confirms where the failure lives.
What does Cloudflare error 521 mean?
Error 521 means Cloudflare is up but the website’s own origin server refused the connection — the site behind Cloudflare is down, not Cloudflare. It is a useful distinction: 521 points at the site operator, while widespread 500s point at Cloudflare itself.
